2D BAR CODES AND THE INTERNET
This 2D bar code contains the entire Internet
address for the New York Presbyterian Hospital Web site for "DIAGNOSING HAND
CONDITIONS" The following is the actual text of the address of the site.
http://wo-pub2.med.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/WebObjects/PublicA.woa/6/wa/viewHContent?Web site=nyp&contentID=1109&wosid=Jb60GesEba6buLiEGZ2H20
In order to access the Web site, the entire text of the address would have to be keyed into the computer browser by hand, using the keyboard. The chance of an error occurring is very high because if even one character or symbol is entered incorrectly the address will not work. If the 2D bar code shown above the text is scanned into the computer from the film hard copy, the address is input virtually instantly. You can see a demonstration of this on a simulated X-ray hard copy on the HARD COPY DEMONSTRATION page.
When you go to the HARD COPY DEMONSTRATION you will see a simulated film hard copy with an X-ray image and with text giving information on the patient and Internet addresses which would be entered into a computer browser, connected to the Internet, in order to access the listed Web site. If you click on the text of the address nothing will happen. This is how an actual film would act if the text were scanned with a bar code scanner.
The second simulated film hard copy contains 2D bar codes. It is important to understand that when you click on one of these 2D bar codes it will represent scanning it with a laser or imaging bar code scanner. You will see how an actual scanned film would act when the scanner is connected to the computer browser.
